What Is A Sex Coach?

A sex coach is a trained professional who helps people with sexual issues.

SEX COACH (noun): Offers insight into how clients can improve their sex lives and overcome erotic barriers.

The job’s actual requirements, however, are malleable: What exactly a sex coach does depends on the sex coach in question. Some will come to your house, watch you work, and give you pointers; others stick to a talk-based method. These coaches offer insight into how clients can improve their sex lives and overcome erotic barriers. If that sounds like therapy to you, well, it isn’t—not quite.

WomensHealthMag.com got a quote from Annette Gates, a certified somatic sex educator (CSSE), certified hypnotherapist (CHT), and sex and relationship coach operating out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who said,

“Most people have some form of difficulty and challenges surrounding sexuality that they need to work through,”

Her job, as she sees it, is to create a safe space in which people can talk about sex—their fantasies, their traumatic experiences, their insecurities, their fears—without shame.

Sex coaching is a new approach to dealing with sexual and related relationship issues. Sex coaches not only help their clients overcome problems such as sexless marriage and sexual dysfunction, they also guide them to realize their full sexual potential through education and expansion.

Sexuality coaching can go far beyond the limits of therapy to help clients find a full array of exciting and pleasurable erotic experiences. In the United States and most, if not all, other countries, a majority of people are having mediocre sex lives. Because sex has been so shamed and there is very little qualified education around it, people are often unable to find their full sexual expression.

A well-trained and certified sex coach has taken the time to learn the keys to an amazing sex life – and they probably aren’t what you think. The information about sex found in traditional media and on the internet can be very difficult to sort through and so much of it is just plain bad advice. For example, hot tips from a magazine might tell you that your sexless marriage can be solved with a date night or a vacation in the tropics. While any of these may be helpful, at least temporarily, it is only because they might align with one of your deeper desires.

To really get to the bottom of what you want and create lasting changes in your relationship to your sexuality and with your partner, there is often deeper, more nuanced exploration necessary. Tackling this journey is much more efficient with an experienced sexuality coach on your side.

Why work with a sexuality coach?

Society tells us that we are supposed to naturally know how to have sex. The desire to have sex is natural, but the skills to be a great lover or to engage fully in sex aren’t. The truth is that people need to learn how to have great sex. Social animals (including humans) learn skills through modeling and explicit instruction.

Since sex is something that is shamed in our culture, talking about it or giving explicit instruction still remains rare. Young adults have very few good ways to learn how to have satisfying sex. A few will be lucky enough to have a partner teach them.

Unfortunately, most people don’t give good feedback, so many people end up not knowing what makes for great sex. This is where working with a good sexuality coach can be very helpful. Sex is learnable and teachable. The best way to learn about it is to get feedback from an experienced, non-judgmental and cheer-leading person. It’s most helpful if they also understand both the physiology and the psychology of sex.

Most people don’t have any idea how their body really works, what they authentically desire in bed, what kind of a relationship they really want, or how to talk about sex in a healthy, open, respectful way.

At no point in most of our lives is healthy, open sexual communication ever modeled for us. It’s super common for folks to feel ashamed, awkward, frustrated, or just plain lost when it comes to openly and easily talking about sexual needs and desires.

Sexuality coaching is a powerful way to rewrite the rules so that they work for you, so you can thrive. Sex can be awkward. Sex can feel like a burden. And so often we feel inadequate or broken.

A sexuality coach can help you realize that you’re normal, healthy, and deserving of love, pleasure, and respect.

Having a coach to help walk with you through the tough stuff can get you where you want to go much faster than you would on your own. It’s like having a cheerleader, an accountability buddy, and a sexpert helping you navigate all the tricky places where you typically get stuck.

Like many things, coaching can completely transform the rest of your life or it can be a little blip on the radar – the determining factor is how ready you are to do the work and how open you are to trying on some new perspectives.

DISCOVER YOUR UNLIMITED SEXUALITY

Sexuality Coaching may be good for people who want to explore issues relating to sexuality, desire, intimacy in relationships, power dynamics in relationships or any patterns that are displeasing or causing stress.

Coaching is about getting honest about where you are, figuring out where you’d like to go, and then creating concrete steps to move you in the direction of your desired future. It can be challenging, transforming, insightful, and give you tools that help you navigate future challenges.

People come to explore sexual problems, relationship problems and to expand their sexual menus.
